Thorwald started with percussion at the age of 14 with Peter Elberse. He studied percussion at the Conservatory of Utrecht and Tilburg with Werner Otten, Hans Zonderop, Johan Faber, Peter de Vries and Arnold Marinissen. Thorwald regularly performs as a soloist with orchestra or gives solo recitals. He has an extensive repertoire as a chamber music player.Thorwald is a specialist on the Theremin, an electronic instrument. He studied the Theremin with Lydia Kavina, the last protegé of Leon Theremin, the inventor of that instrument. Thorwald has worked extensively with Lydia at several festivals and concerts, and together they premiered the Quintet for Theremin-instruments by Joseph Schillinger in the Royal Festival Hall. He is a specialist in the historical development of the Theremin and several pieces, including concertos, have been written for him.Thorwald is now being coached by the cellist Saskia Boon to study the string-repertoire and the application of string techniques of the Theremin. www.thorwaldjorgensen.com
