Martine Sikkenk, mandoline

Martine has wanted to play the mandoline since she first heard the instrument at a very early age. She studied the mandoline with Benny Ludemann at the Sweelinck Conservatory of Amsterdam. She was the first person in The Netherlands to receive a master’s degree in this subject. She continued her studies with Professor Marga Wilden-Hüsgen in Germany, specializing also in baroque-mandoline. Martine plays both old and modern music with several ensembles and orchestras. She is a regular guest at the “Nieuw Ensemble” and the “ASKO|Schönberg”- ensemble. She forms a duo with Nelleke ter Berg (“Amuse-oreille”) and she plays in the ensembles “Zimbello” and “Insomnio”, which both specialize in contemporary music. She played with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and worked in productions of “De Nederlandse Opera”. Martine played the solo part of the concerto for mandoline with ASKO|Schönberg and ensemble “Eight Metal Strings” of the Dutch composor Martijn Padding. This piece was specially written for her and its recording in 2011 was rewarded with “The Edison Klassiek”.  Other major events include the performances of Vivaldi’s mandoline concerto’s together accopanied by the Dutch Youth Orchestra Summer Academy in the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and the Konzerthaus Berlijn. Martine conducts the Rotterdams Mandoline & Guitar-orchestra “Aeoline” and teaches at seminars and festivals in Germany and at the Summerschool “Mandoline & Guitar” ,which she organizes herself.
